Egads! I've been tagged!
Shakes' Sis was busy tagging people willy nilly, so I thought I'd join in the fun.
The rules: five stories about me, one of which is a blatant fabrication. Guess which one is the lie.
1. I have an eidetic memory. I can instantly recall faces, navigate after only reading a map once, remember arcane bits of information, and remember most conversations verbatim.
2. I once killed a dog with my bare hands. It was some stray that had wandered into my grandmother's yard during one of our more frequent family get-togethers, and my uncles and other older cousins were in other parts of the house or out on beer or food runs. The dog tried to attack one of my younger cousins, so I grabbed it by the tail to divert it away. When it bit my arm, I lifted its head and ripped out its throat with my free hand. My mom freaked out and I got a ride to the hospital for my trouble. I still have the scar on my left arm. Soon after this, my grandfather fixed his fence.
3. My first stint with reporting came in the summer of 1992. The editor of the small weekly newspaper in Zapata County, Texas, couldn't locate the staff reporter, and the staff photographer was on the other side of the county covering another story. The editor's kid and I hopped into my car and sped down to the lake in search of our story: a local man and his two nephews had disappeared while fishing. We got there after the young boys bodies had been fished out of the lake. The sheriff and his deputies were just coming back with the uncle's body in tow when the family, who had found out from a relative in the sheriff's office, pulled up. The editor's kid took the pictures while I got the facts from one of the deputies. The thing I remember most was the smell: a drowned body has a very distinct odor, and it's not a good one.
4. I nearly killed myself and my siblings in the San Marcos River. Our family and a few others went camping out on the river one spring. Someone had brought along a large, round yellow raft, large enough to hold at least eight people. We had fun rafting down the river until we decided to move to a very dangerous part of the river, festooned with trees, swift currents and pockets of deep water. We were doing well holding on until we took a spill near a cluster of trees. I foolishly held onto the raft, not realizing that by doing so, I was in fact holding the raft down on everyone else's head, keeping their heads under water. The majority of us tumbled down to a sandbar, except for my sister Stephanie, who had flown through the air and landed in the roots of a large tree and was trapped. I managed to get one of my sister's friends across the rapids and up the steep bank, whereupon she ran for help. Pop showed up with a large rope and got us across the rapids without harm. I wouldn't let Pop throw away that rope for a very long time.
5. My first foray with politics was in Zapata County, November 1992. The editor received a tip that someone at the County Clerk's office was playing fast and loose with the ballot box. My boss camped each of us in the staff at different points of entrance around the courthouse with a camera and instructions to snap whoever came out. I waited at the back of the courthouse for nearly three hours until the county clerk, several members of the county supervisor's board and other electoral officials came out with the ballot box - which was clearly against federal regulations at the time. I snapped pictures of everyone, which got the Clerk hot and bothered. He picked a argument with me while his friends tried to make a getaway. Unfortunately, my boss heard the commotion and rescued me.
OK, I'm tagging Konagod, JackGoff, Elena, Tom and Deborah.
EDIT: DOH! Sis already tagged Deborah. Fine, I'll tag Litbrit.
OK, Jack, I'll bite. Nearest book, page 123, fifth sentence.
"When he came to me and told me that your client had asked for a bribe, Mr. Rumpole."
- John Mortimer, "Rumpole and the Rotten Apple", The Second Rumpole Omnibus
Kona and Jack started it; Shakes Sis furthered it.
